The numbers look wrong

Before doubting the calculation, check these four things.

Four common explanations

  • A cell is empty where I expected a number

    What it means
    One of that calculation's inputs is missing. Empty means "we do not know", and the reason is stated beside it.
    What to do
    Read the reason. It usually means a spread row is unmapped or a period was never imported.

  • A ratio that should be positive is empty and mentions sign convention

    What it means
    The source file carried liabilities or equity as negatives and the sign normalisation was not certain.
    What to do
    This is deliberate — a meaningless negative is not shown. Check the account mapping for that section.

  • A number that was right yesterday is flagged stale

    What it means
    A page in the source document was reviewed and corrected.
    What to do
    Walk the flagged rows and re-confirm the spread. The flag changed nothing; it only says the number no longer agrees with its source.

  • An amount I imported was not read correctly

    What it means
    Usually a cell that was not a number at all. Such a cell is flagged and never guessed.
    What to do
    Look at the flagged cells in that table. Persian digits, parenthesised negatives and thousands separators are all supported, so the problem is usually the text inside the cell.

Why amounts use Latin digits

Even in the Persian interface, amounts are shown in Latin digits so that when they are copied they are still numbers in a spreadsheet or an email.

Dates are the opposite and are written in the Jalali calendar with Persian digits.
